A Secret Garden Uncovered!

A Secret Garden Uncovered!

Residents at West Street in Havant, the Hampshire County Council run home for adults with learning disabilities recently rated ‘Outstanding’ by CQC, are set to enjoy great times in their garden this summer thanks to the efforts of volunteers organised by Community First.

Three volunteers from Pfizer Havant, gave up a morning to help staff and residents get their garden into shape for summer, and discovered a ‘secret garden’ in the process.  The tidy up uncovered a corner of the garden that was very overgrown and hadn’t been used by residents for some time.  The volunteers cleared away vegetation to make the area a perfect spot for outdoor activities and relaxing.

Karen McKnight, senior residential service officer, at West Street said: “Our residents enjoy going into the garden all year round but particularly in the warmer months.  We can’t thank Pfizer enough for their help in making it an even more pleasant place for them to spend time, particularly with summer coming up. Their hard work has meant that our residents will be able to enjoy all of the garden now, and we’re already planning how to make the best use of our new space.”

Pfizer take part in a rolling programme of volunteering events around the Havant area organised by Community First, which provides local voluntary and community groups with a number of support services. Sue, a volunteer from Pfizer, said: “We really enjoyed our morning at West Street and seeing the transformation of the garden unfold before our eyes was quite an achievement.”

Without the support of local businesses, many charity and community groups would struggle. For more information about how you can get involved with the employee volunteering scheme contact Rachel Taylor at or telephone 0300 500 8085 ext 9724
