Community First's Help and Support Directory is an easy to use directory of local community services. It has been created to help people connect with support services and community groups where they live.
Volunteering is rewarding in any weather, so a grey and drizzling day did not deter a team of eleven willing volunteers from a local Winchester based company.
Active Navigation create software to help customers navigate the huge amount of information they obtain electronically, taking control of the risks posed by sensitive data. Keen to help in the community, they enlisted the help of Community First to facilitate a volunteer day as part of their ongoing charitable initiative.
Shepherds Down School is a state special school for boys and girls aged from 4 to 11. The school has large grounds needing a huge amount of upkeep, so they were extremely happy to welcome Active Navigation to help in their sensory garden and first aid room. The volunteers cut back and weeded the overgrown sensory garden, clearing pathways to enable easy access for wheelchairs, while a team of three repainted the first aid room.
Brian from Shepherds Down was delighted with the team’s efforts, saying, “Active Navigation’s help today has been fantastic. I would like to thank them for their enthusiasm despite the awful weather. The garden takes a lot of upkeep and what they have achieved in one day would have taken us several days. The first aid room has, once again, a clean and fresh feel. They have been a huge help.”
Libby, a volunteer from Active Navigation said, “This has been the most satisfying and rewarding day, I have enjoyed volunteering and seeing the difference we have made in a short time. I hope this has helped a local worthy cause such as Shepherds Down School. It’s been a great team-building experience and I would recommend that people get involved in community projects.”
Without the support of local businesses, many charity and community groups would struggle. For more information about how you can get involved with the Business Volunteering Scheme, contact Rachel Taylor or telephone 01730 774057.
