Local Youth Sailing Charity Gets Ship Shape with Pfizer

In glorious September weather, it was all hands on deck for a group of 10 volunteers from Havant based pharmaceutical company Pfizer to help a fantastic charity based at Langstone Harbour.
Havant Youth Sail Training Scheme (HYSTS) is a not for profit registered charity offering young people between the ages 8-18 the opportunity to learn to sail. The Charity was founded in 1974 with a vision to provide challenging sailing, open to all, irrespective of income, ability or gender. HYSTS is run by a small team of dedicated volunteers, with a huge amount of tasks to undertake to
ensure the smooth running of the organisation. They contacted Community First to see if there were volunteers available to help with essential tasks and Pfizer were very pleased to help.

The team worked hard to complete several jobs that usually would have taken a huge amount of time and with the group of volunteers, the work was done within a few hours. Pfizer take part in several volunteer days throughout the year and make a huge difference to several charities and organisations around the Havant area.

Geoff Lynch, Chairman of HYSTS said, “The team from Pfizer worked with a will and achieved everything they were asked to do, boats were moved and cleaned and a new storage facility built. None of this work could have been achieved in the time available without the help of the team from Pfizer, superbly organised by Rachel at Community First, we thank them so much.”

Alison, a volunteer from Pfizer, said “it was lovely to help a local project who provide sailing for the young people in and around our area. Who wouldn’t want to be outside in the glorious sunshine giving something back to the amazing projects in and around the community?”

If you are interested in booking a sailing session visit the Havant Youth Sail Training Scheme website to view the dates available.

Without the support of local businesses, many charity and community groups would struggle. For more information about how you can get involved with the Employee Volunteering Scheme, contact Rachel Taylor at or telephone 01730 774057.
