Support4SEND Open Recruitment Morning – New Roles, New Opportunities!

04/06/2018

Could you start volunteering to support young people with special educational needs and their families in Hampshire? Come along to the Support4SEND Open Recruitment Morning at Community First’s Winchester office, on Wednesday 20th June at 10:30am to 12:30pm.  (The flyer)

Could you help support a young person in a meeting with educational staff? Or visit a parent at home to help them write their views about their child’s special educational needs.  If so, then a Hampshire-wide service would be interested in hearing from you.

Support4SEND is a free and confidential service offering information, advice and support on issues relating to a child or young person’s special educational needs or disability.  The service works with parents and with children and young people up to the age of 25.

Currently there are 15 volunteers, one of whom is Craig Morris.  Craig has been volunteering for about 15 years. When asked what he enjoys most about the role he replied, “Variety.  Every call to help is different. Plus knowing that you are making a difference.”

Since the beginning of 2018 Support4SEND has experienced a 23% increase in referrals.  It would like to recruit more volunteers and, in partnership with Community First, has developed some new roles to support its service.  These include a Volunteer Co-ordinator who would be the first point of contact for potential volunteers and a Champion to help raise awareness amongst professionals, parents and young people.  There are 6 roles in total, 3 based in Winchester and 3 countywide.

Elaine Fish, Assistant Information Advice and Support Officer for Support4SEND would welcome enquiries, “All these opportunities provide full training and our volunteers value the flexibility in terms of commitment.”

Support4SEND is holding an open recruitment morning on Wednesday 20th June from 10.30 to 12.30 where you can find out more about its service and the roles on offer.  It is being held at Community First’s office, Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester, SO23 8SB.
