The Ashworth Charitable Trust (“the Trust”) is a small grant-making charity. It was created primarily to support humanitarian causes operating locally, nationally and internationally, as opposed to animal or utilitarian projects. For the most part, the Trust looks to fund projects and not core funding.
Criteria:
- The project or activity has been initiated by people living at the grassroots who are empowered to find the solutions to their own problems;
- The project has a relatively simple, clear set of objectives and actions that further the vision of the Trust;
- The project develops the capacity of individuals, their communities or their institutions helping them to help themselves;
- The project enhances the learning of individuals, their communities or their institutions;
- The project’s ‘beneficiaries’ participate in the management and running of the project or activity; and
- The project’s ‘beneficiaries’ have suffered, or are suffering, from injustice, poverty or personal circumstances that are difficult for the individual to overcome without assistance.
Levels of grant do not usually exceed three thousand pounds.

Small grants are unrestricted and do not have to be used on a specific purpose, although we do ask grant recipients to report on how they used the funding.
Small grants range from £1,000 – £5,000 per year, for up to three years
LARGE GRANT
These grants are for larger charities whose annual income is between £500,000 and £5 million, according to the latest published accounts.
Large grants are restricted for specific projects with defined goals and budgets, and may be spent on, for example, salaries, equipment, training, monitoring and administration.
Large grants usually range from £10,000 to £60,000 in total. This can be spread over one to three years.
The Newby Trust (the “Trust”) funds local, regional or national charities registered in the UK within the broad categories of education, the environment, health and social welfare.
The principal purpose of the Trust is to enable people in the UK to improve their quality of life and fulfil their potential. In 2024, the trustees added a new category to provide support for the natural environment.
In the Education, Health and Welfare categories all activities must be undertaken in the UK and the Trust is more likely to fund smaller or medium-sized charities with an annual income of less than £1,000,000. In the Environment category, the Trust will fund larger charities and projects may be outside the UK but the applicant and grant-recipient must be a UK-registered charity. In general, only charities that are invited to apply will be considered for a grant.
Grants are usually in the range between £2,000 and £10,000 depending upon the size of your charity.
The Trust accepts applications throughout the year. The Trustees consider applications at two meetings, usually in March and November. As a general rule, the Trust would recommend submitting completed applications at least two months in advance of each meeting.
