The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Social Prescribing Network (HSPN) Webinar was held on Thursday 2 October 2025, entitled:-
‘Wellbeing in the Wild: Natural Approaches to Blue and Green Social Prescribing’
You can view the presentation’s slides here
This Webinar was attended by c65 stakeholders from across the health, community, and voluntary sectors – to hear about the wide variety of blue and green wellbeing spaces, activities, and useful resources, that are on offer across Hampshire.
Key Presenters and Their Contributions
Angela Gill, Hants & Isle of Wight Social Prescribing Network Facilitator, Community First, opened the Webinar with a welcome and overview of the programme, setting the scene for a discussion on “Wellbeing in the Wild”—exploring how nature-based approaches (green and blue spaces) can support social prescribing and improve mental and physical wellbeing.
Tim Houghton, Chief Executive, Community First, provided a strategic perspective from the voluntary and community sector, focusing on the implications of local government reorganisation and devolution. He discussed the development of a VCSE manifesto and the importance of strengthening the sector’s collective voice. Tim also highlighted upcoming events and campaigns, including the HIVCA meeting and the “Health in Partnership” event, and shared resources like the Get Hampshire Working Plan and Youth & Family Matters’ “WILD” programme.
Megan Saunders, Senior Public Health Practitioner, Hampshire County Council, explored the mental health benefits of nature connection, distinguishing it from mere nature contact. She presented local data and insights from Hampshire community researchers, identifying barriers to accessing green and blue spaces (e.g. transport, safety, infrastructure) and motivators (e.g. clean, safe, activity-rich environments). Megan advocated for inclusive nature engagement and shared practical ideas for integrating nature into everyday life, such as outdoor appointments, sensory trails, and family-focused activities.
Matthew Martin, Health & Wellbeing Officer, Swim England showcased Swim England’s work in promoting swimming as a therapeutic and inclusive activity. He introduced the Water Wellbeing Accreditation programme and shared resources for supporting individuals with long-term health conditions. His presentation covered training opportunities, inclusive pool features (e.g. hydrotherapy, dementia-friendly sessions), and the development of CPD events and session plans. Matt emphasised the role of aquatic environments in improving physical and mental health.
Tony Knox, Education Ranger, Bird Aware Solent shared Bird Aware Solent’s outreach and education initiatives, including free coastal talks, guided bird walks, and dog-friendly nature programmes. He highlighted the importance of accessible and beginner-friendly nature experiences, and encouraged use of local blue spaces for activities like birdwatching, walking, and water sports. Tony’s presentation also addressed the cultural and social value of coastal environments and their potential to support wellbeing across diverse communities.
