IN THIS SESSION :

You will gain an awareness of who might be a vulnerable adult or identify where a child could be at risk; what constitutes maltreatment; how to protect themselves from creating a safeguarding concern and what they should do if they suspect maltreatment of a vulnerable adult or a child.

1. Understanding Safeguarding:
Definition and Importance:

- What safeguarding means: protecting individuals (particularly children and vulnerable adults) from harm, abuse, and neglect.
- Why safeguarding is essential for their role and the organization.
- Legal and Ethical Responsibilities.

2. Recognizing Signs of Abuse and Neglect:

Types of Abuse:

- Physical, emotional, sexual, financial, neglect, and exploitation.
- Examples of each type relevant to their role.
- Indicators of Abuse
- Understanding why individuals may not report abuse (fear, shame, dependency).

3. Responding to Concerns:

How to Handle Disclosures:

- Create a safe and supportive environment.
- Listen actively and let the individual speak freely.
- Use open-ended, non-leading questions.
- Do’s and Don’ts.

4. Reporting Procedures:

Internal Reporting Process:

- Who to report concerns to (e.g., designated safeguarding lead).
- How to record and document concerns accurately.
- External Reporting:


5. Specific Risks Relevant to safeguarding:

Contextual Safeguarding:

- Address risks specific to the organization (e.g., online safety, transport-related risks, financial exploitation).
- Risks related to specific groups, such as children, disabled individuals, or elderly people.
- Cultural Awareness.

6. Preventative Measures:

Promoting a Safeguarding Culture:

- Encouraging open communication and vigilance.
- Regularly reviewing safeguarding policies and practices.
- Training on Boundaries.


DELIVERY: online via Zoom: You will join a small group online to explore the issues identified above, in a supported and informal environment.
