East Hampshire and Havant Voluntary Sector Health & Wellbeing Forum – 23 May 2024

Introduction  

The (virtual) East Hampshire and Havant Health & Wellbeing Forum was held on Thursday 23 May 2024 – with c33 attendees. Following on from attendees being welcomed,  

Tim Houghton, Chief Executive  Community First provided a Community & Voluntary Sector update. Tim began by describing the challenging times for the sector; he summarised the volunteer, funding and accessible transport support that Community First offer. He also highlighted key health & wellbeing activities, including Volunteer Week 3-9 June. Tim concluded by explaining about HCC’s Sensory Walking Routes and current funding grants – HCC’s Local Solutions Grant and Household Support Grant. 

Colin Beevor, Matron, Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist and Service Manager, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust began by describing the different types of arthritis, also relating to age, the Self-Care Continuum, the 5 Symptoms of Patients, Polypharmacy, community support and signposting. Colin concluded by referring to ARMA – the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance. 

Keith Harrison, Health Systems Engagement Manager (South West and South Central) Diabetes UK focused upon preventing Type 2 diabetes in younger people. He explained what Diabetes UK do, the health challenges of the past 5 years, the risks involved, diagnosis and making informed decisions. Keith concluded by describing the role of education, providing some very informative statistics and a call to action re 3 ways to help…  

Finally, Katie Davies, Project Manager, Outreach Cancer Wellbeing Support, Wessex Cancer Support described what Wessex Cancer Support do, their Mission and Vision. A moving but positive video was played, describing the impact of diagnosis on a young mum. Katie then explained who the service helps, the Cancer Support Centres, the online support and the Daisy Bus Transport Service. The presentation concluded by highlighting the value of the Sing for Life Groups, their Newsletter and how the service is funded. 

The Health & Wellbeing Forum ended by the contributors and attendees being thanked and by confirming the (face to face) Health & Wellbeing Networking and Showcase member event:-
