Healthy Walks – Julian
Julian, a 78-year-old retiree from Stubbington, has always had a passion for walking.
Nearly two decades ago, Julian picked up a leaflet for Fareham Healthy Walks at the Gosport Information Office. Intrigued by the idea of joining a group of like-minded individuals, he decided to give it a try. Now, 19 years later, Julian remains one of the most dedicated walkers in the programme, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Julian mentioned that the walks used to be more frequent and drew a larger group. Over time, and with the impact of the Covid pandemic, this has changed. Still, Julian remains committed, joining at least once a week to stay active and connected with the community.
The walks Julian participates in, which vary in length from one to two hours, take the group around Portchester and North Fareham. On one occasion, they ventured into the New Forest.

Over the years, Julian has formed strong friendships within the group, including with a fellow walker who lives nearby. Their bond has grown beyond the walks, and now Julian and his wife often socialise with this couple. Julian recently attended a birthday picnic at Holly Hill for Maurice, one of the walk leaders. The walks are led by different leaders on a rotating basis, which Julian appreciates as it adds variety to the experience. Occasionally, the group will stop for a break, so everyone can rest and chat over a cup of coffee.
Recently, Julian has noticed that walking is becoming more challenging. His fitness levels aren’t what they used to be, and he finds it harder to keep up at times. However, his determination to continue walking is unwavering. “As long as I can put one foot in front of the other, I’ll be out there walking. It’s not just about staying fit, it’s about staying connected with the people and the places that mean so much to me.”
